Why do I pay Workman’s Compensation – a story that will open your eyes?

Why do I pay Workman’s Compensation – a story that will open your eyes?

Most of us get caught up in the mechanics of submitting workman’s compensation returns and meeting deadlines. It is only when disaster strikes, and a staff member gets injured that you stop and really understand why you submit your return and make the payments.

Just over a month ago, one of our clients had a staff member seriously injured at work. The staff member was rushed to the local hospital, and one of the first questions that the admissions staff asked was – will the hospital claim be covered by Workman’s Compensation?

If it wasn’t, the client would have to make a deposit payment in advance running into hundreds of thousands of Rands before the staff member would be admitted to the hospital.

Put yourself in that client’s shoes. Imagine standing there with a seriously injured staff member at hospital admissions, and the answer to that question is no…

The good news is that the answer was yes, the staff member was admitted and is recovering at home, and will hopefully return back to work in a couple of months’ time.

This story does put a very different perspective on the importance of the admin grind of submitting returns and making payments.
